Red-eyed Vireo

14-15 cm. Crown and nape gray with a prominent white superciliary bordered on both sides by black stripes. Above olive brown. Below whitish, with a lemon yellow tinge on the flanks and crissum. Iris reddish. Characteristic call <10> song a repeated "cheeewee" and "cheeweewi" vocalization 1 . A slurred "cheeii vocalizations 2 and 3 . Forages in the canopy for fruits and insects, rarely down to eye level. Breeds in Southeast Brazil in October-January. Morphological and biochemical similarities between the nominate race breeding in North America and /Vireo olivaceus chivi of South America suggests that /chivi originated through colonization of South America by wintering individuals of /olivaceus ^149 . Common in spring. Apparently undergoes significant movements during the year. At Fazenda Intervales this species is commonly found in mixed bird parties in the non-breeding months of September, February and March. It is much rarer and not associated with bird flocks in the breeding months November, December and January and is very rarely seen between April and September suggesting that it spends these months somewhere else ^150 .
