34.5 cm. Erect frontal crest. Head, neck and chest blackish. Violet blue on the neck, mantle, back, wings, and tail. Outer half of tail white above. Tail all white from below. Lower underparts white. Iris dark. A repeated sharp "kiar kiar". A variety of calls, see ^119 . Forages in small noisy groups in the crowns of trees and also comes down to the ground. November ^147 . Locally not uncommon in dry forests and forest borders in the interior. Spreads into deforested regions ^119 . Old records from Estado S<C4>o Paulo are from<8E>Cananeia, Iguape, Fazenda<8E>Poco Grande ^40 , more recently near<8E>Itapetininga, Rio Verde, Itarar<CA>, Campos do Jord<C4>o, Bananal, S<C4>o Jose do Barreiro ^119 .
