11.5 cm. In Southeast Brazil a bird of the past. Upper parts bluish gray. Wings black with white wing bars. Primaries and secondaries edged white. Crown black. White cheeks. Tail black with white outer feathers. Underside creamy white. <NThe female lacks the black crown.
Call similar to other gnatcatchers, a slurred "weet" or a "zi-wet", faintly "gyp". Song a "tee tee tee tee swee swee swee" ^146 .
Forages in canopy and at medium height of forest. Commonly in mixed species flocks.
A cup nest 25-39 meters up in a bare tree north of the Iguazu airport ^146 .
This species was an inhabitant of the interior dryer forests which became heavily fragmented or have disappeared.
Originally distributed from Espiritu Santo to northern Rio Grande do Sul, but the sources of this information are not known. Now regularly only encountered in the southern and south-western part of its range ^146 . Still found in small numbers inland in the drier primary forests of Parque National de Iguazu, in northwest Rio Grande do Sul, in western Santa Catarina, in eastern Paraguay, in Misiones and Corrientes, Argentina. There are only a few old Brazilian recordings listed by Pinto ^40 , a sign of its rareness | Rio Feio, NW Estado S<C4>o Paulo, Rio Ribeira near<8E>Iguape, Estado S<C4>o Paulo, both from 1905. It seems that this species never adapted to the altered conditions that resulted from clear cutting and subsequent regrowth of secondary forest. Does not occur above 400 meters ^133 .
