23 cm. Mostly rufescent brown, the belly lighter buffy. Chin and throat pale buff, streaked brown. <NThe juvenile is deep brown with pale spots on crown, nape, mantle and back. Chin and throat pale buff with black spots. Buff shaft streaks on scapulars and buff spots at end of secondaries. Underside pale brown with black spots. The song below differs from a recorded song from Trinidad ^145 . Call a harsh "bak" or "chuk" and a rapid "chat chat chat" ^143 . Forages in low vegetation and on the ground, shy. Sings from a concealed perch up in a tree. December. Rare in the understory and on the ground in rain forest, often near water. Might occur as a straggler in northern Estado Rio de Janeiro.
