Slaty Thrush

21.5 cm. The male has an orange yellow bill. Legs yellow, brown or grayish. Eye ring yellow. Upperparts dark gray with black head. The white throat is streaked blackish. Breast and sides of abdomen light grayish. Belly and crissum white. <NThe female is greenish-brown on the back, with a brown head and brownish breast. /Turdus albicollis is larger and has rufous on flanks . <NIn the juvenile the upperparts are olivaceous-brown streaked light buff: the underparts are buff-white barred blackish-brown. Bill dark. Legs brown ^143 . Call a "tsuk" and a high metallic single whistle. The song is a sequence of short strophes consisting of doubled or tripled thin metallic whistles of a tinkling quality delivered in intervals of varying lengths. Shy. Seeks out fruit trees: prefers subcanopy of wooded border situations and is therefore often difficult to see. Also forages quietly on the ground scratching and turning over fallen leaves like other thrushes. Ridgely and Tudor ^133 state that this thrush does only breed in Southern Estado S<C4>o Paulo and from there on southward. They think that individuals recorded north of southern Estado S<C4>o Paulo are winter migrants. In contrast, Clement ^143 includes the Serra Mantiqueira and Serra dos Org<C4>os in the breeding range. Willis and Oniki ^119 also state that this species breeds in the mountains of the Northeast. Most likely individuals that sing in October <10> November in the Serra Mantiqueira, breed there. Supposedly breeds in November-December ^142 . In Rio Grande do Sul humid and Araucaria riverine forest, also gardens with tall trees, ^133 , parks and plantation. Regular in the Serra Mantiqueira and Serra dos Org<C4>os in forest. Southern mountainous part of Estado S<C4>o Paulo,<8E>Itatiaia<8E>National Park in the <8E>Serra Mantiqueira, Serra dos Org<C4>os<8E>. In winter found at many inland locations, orchards, e.g. <8E>Itapetininga, Piquete, Campinas, Rio Claro ^119 .
