22 cm. In both sexes the legs are bright yellow. Male has a yellow bill, in the female the bill is grayish with a yellow base. Yellow eye ring. The male is black with a gray back and a gray belly. The female is dark brown above, more buffy below, belly palest. Fine dark streaks on throat. Crissum buff-brown. <NJuvenile females have dark brown upperparts with brown wings and tail: chin whitish becoming buff- yellow on throat and yellowish on breast, spotted finely with brown on chin and throat: brown bars and tips on breast and flanks. <NJuvenile males have slate-brown upperparts with black wings and tail and pale orange spotting to crown, mantle, back and scapulars. <NThe first-winter bird has yellowish- orange tips to median and greater coverts and first-summer birds still retain thin white tips to greater coverts, forming a thin wingbar ^143 . Song vocalizations 1, 2 and 6 with thrush-like general character, but contains squeaky phrases which are frequently repeated several times. The particular strophes used are specific for each singer. Sometimes mimics other songs. Has a variety of calls | a "wrrr" 3 , a short "writ" 4 , a soft "wek" 5 . Willis and Oniki ^119 note a raucous "iuj". Mostly arboreal, frequents fruit trees.
