Migrant and winter resident from Northern hemisphere: bluish black above: back with whitish streaks: forehead and collar buffy white, sides of head and throat rufous, black crescent-like patch on proximal part of rufous throat: rump cinnamon rufous: gray-white chest, belly white: tail almost square. The "twitter-squeak" song is heard in vocalization 1, "chur" and "pur" calls are heard on vocalizations 3 and 4 ^138 . Forages in flocks low over ground, at warm weather higher. In how much their special adaptation to feed mainly on small swarming insects, such as termites, ants and diptera plays a role in the winter quarters, is not known. Breeds in the Northern hemisphere, breeding attempts in the Buenos Aires province, Argentina ^144 . Winter visitor throughout, foraging over open country and open areas in forested regions.
