The account

Description

12 cm. A rare migrant from Northern hemisphere. Grayish brown above, below whitish with diagnostic brown chest band. Tail slightly forked. Wings dark brown.

Where it was recorded

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Usually a rolling one or two syllable 'drrrt' as in vocalization #1. The rapid sequence of short calls in vocalizations in #2 (twittering and continuous chatter).

Behavior

Forages low over open country; forms large flocks, also with other swallow species; sleeps in reed beds of swamps and lakes in large numbers.

Breeding

Breeds in the Northern hemisphere, arrives in Brazil in September.

Habitat and status

Few records. Open areas, farms.

Distribution

Winters south to central Brazil. One found near Iguape (December 18, 1981) and others near Sales Oliveira and Morro Agudo, north-east Estado de São Paulo in March 1984 (⁷⁶). Below 1000 meters
