The account

Description

17.5 cm. Above dark gray-brown. Below grayish white with a gray-brown breast band, the center of breast below the breast band with gray-brown spots. Easily distinguished from Bank Swallow by much larger size and broader triangular wings.

Where it was recorded

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

'Cher' like calls as in vocalization # 1 and # 4 seem to be the most common vocalizations, 'zweet' calls are heard in vocalization # 2, vocalization #3 might be the song.

Behavior

Not as gregarious as other martins, normally flies low over vegetation and water. In rainy conditions forages higher.

Breeding

In Southeast Brazil a solitary breeder nesting in hornero nests and holes in walls of buildings, bridges, earth banks. November-March (¹³⁸).

Habitat and status

Over open country of the interior, often close to human habitations and water. According to Ihering (¹³⁹) moved into Estado São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro following colonization of these regions by Furnarius rufus around 1895. In winter sometimes occurs in large flocks with other swallows; often roosts in towns. Individuals observed in winter could be migrants from the South (⁵³).
