16 cm. Sexes alike. A relatively long pointed bill. Head and neck grayish-white with dusky scaling the head somewhat crested, the crest being red bordered by black with the red largely concealed. Above olive-green. The wings are dusky with two narrow yellow wing bars and indistinct yellow edging to the flight feathers. Belly yellowish with bold black spots. Song is a very high and sharp descending whistle, "ziiieeeew", repeated every minute or so. Other vocalizations include a weak "tet" and a high tremulous "tsirrr" ^30 . Often high in the canopy of tall trees, sometimes with mixed bird parties, perch-gleaning chickadee-like and probing moss, lichen and epiphytes. Feeds on insects and fruit. Sometimes perches erect quietly for long times ^30, ^44 . Nest is a small cup ^30 . Local, but not uncommon, in tall primary forest. On the Tres Picos trail at Itatiaia a group of these birds can be found year after year in the same area probably due to the occurrence of particular fruiting trees.
