17 cm. Smaller than /Tityra cayana . Bill black, the mandible bluish-gray. <NMale has a black crown and cheeks and is whitish-gray above. Wings black with the exception of the tertials which are white. Whiter below. Tail black. <NFemale is like the male, but the front of the head is buffy, the cheeks are rufous and the back is a darker gray streaked dusky. The calls are described as being drier than those of other Tityras, like "zick-zick-zick-" ^44 . However the recording included here, a hard, rolling "drrrrrr", is very similar to the vocalizations of /Tityra cayana . Remains in the upper level of large forest trees well above ground. Regularly encountered but rarer than /Tityra cayana in the canopy of humid primary and mature secondary forest and forest borders. Recorded from the Serra do Mar, Serra Mantiqueira, Serra dos Org<C4>os ^15 , and near<8E>Rio de Janeiro ^30 . from S<C4>o Paulo state reported from<8E>Ubatuba<8E>and also from the north of the State, Rinc<C4>o, Ituverava, Silvania<8E>etc. ^40 .
