The account

Description

17 cm. A big becard with a very thick bill.

Male black above. Supra-loral area pale buff-gray. A variable amount of white on the scapulars. Below pale buff-gray.

Female has a dark gray crown and rufous upper parts. The supra-loral area is rufous-yellow. Primaries blackish. Below rufous-yellow.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

A high tri-syllablic 'trrrr-wi-it' plus a variety of low trills and high penetrating whistles such as 'tirrrrrrrrr tirrrrrrr.........wi wi ziee ziee ziu'.

Behavior

Perches in medium stratum of trees. Usually occurs in pairs.

Breeding

This species builds a large globular nest with a side entrance (⁹¹).

Habitat and status

Rather common in open forest or forest edge, plantations and borders of clearings, swamps and lakes.

Distribution

Throughout. The Serra do Mar, Serra Mantiqueira, Serra dos Orgãos, Fazenda Intervales, Iguape, Cananeia etc. to about 1500 meters.

Taxonomy notes

This species was originally placed into the genus Platypsaris which contains larger species than Pachyrhamphus sensu stricto, which are proportionally heavier billed.
