21 cm. A chunky inconspicuous flycatcher of the rain forest canopy. Iris red. Bill black, Uniformly smoky gray above, the crown, wings and tail darker. Below somewhat lighter, the belly with light yellow wash. <NFemales and immature birds show fulvous edging on wing and tail feathers Ridgely . The common call is a loud and repeated whistle | "tatatatatota-CHEW" with emphasis on the last syllable or a "tetetetetePIU" increasing in pitch and loudness. Other calls are a "tchewe tchewe wewewewewi", increasing in pitch and loudness, and similar calls. Perches inconspicuously in the middle and upper canopy of large trees. An outward-hover-gleaner and fruit eater. Sits on the same branch often for a long time without moving. Rare in primary and mature secondary humid forest and sandy woodland. Does not seem to favor forest edge. Possibly throughout but not frequently encountered | In Estado S<C4>o Paulo at <8E>Boraceia, Rio Guaratuba 25 km east-southeast of S<C4>o Paulo city ^76 , Picinguaba, October 1999, Corisco Trail Willis, Mueller F., Remold , Fazenda Intervales, Jureia Pedro Develey . Willis and Oniki found them singing in sandy woodlands at<8E>Iguape, Bertioga<8E>and in lowland forest 25 km. northeast of<8E>Ubatuba<8E>. In Estado Rio de Janeiro near<8E>Cantagalo ^40 . Up to 800 meters ^44 . Forrester lists it as scarce for<8E>Serra do Mar, Serra dos Org<C4>os<8E>and <8E>Rio de Janeiro<8E>.
