17 cm. A striking flycatcher of the forest canopy. Crown black. Nape and back olive-gray speckled darker. Wings black with white edges to the wing coverts and flight feathers. Below grayish, belly white. Black tail. Diagnostic call a repeated "wiwiwiwiwi" or "wiwiwiu-wiu-wiu-wiu" or "wiu-wiu-wiu" and variations thereof. Forages in the forest canopy and betrays its presence by its frequent call. An outward-hover gleaner and fruit eater ^74 . As its relationship to /Myiarchus would suggest, /Sirystes nests in tree cavities ^44 . Common but local in the canopy of primary and mature secondary forest.
