The account
Description
21 cm. A large flycatcher of the uplands. Sexes alike. Slaty gray all over with a blackish eye stripe and ear stripe. Throat lighter. Wings and tail blackish gray, the tail very long and forked.
Juvenile has the crown, back and wings scaled white (Ridgely).

How the map was made
The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.
The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.
The account, continued
Voice
Rarely vocal. Ridgely describes a 'pup-pup-pup..' series. We have recorded a soft 'tuk..tuk..tuké...tuké...' with emphasis on the last syllable. On cut #2 also twice a louder 'wueed'.
Behavior
Perches exposed on top of bushes and trees engaging in aerial hawks. Usually in pairs.
Breeding
Nest is an open cup built of grasses and a few sticks. A particular nest was less than 1 meter from the ground in a bush (89).
Habitat and status
Not uncommon but local in open secondary woodland, forest borders, scrubby slopes and pastures.
Distribution
Throughout, Serra do Mar, Serra Mantiqueira, Serra dos Orgãos, Rio de Janeiro (15, Remold), Fazenda Intervales (Remold). Mostly above 800 meters, reaching 2200 meters in the Serra Mantiqueira.
