12 cm ; tail. An unmistakable black flycatcher with a white superciliary stripe and crown. The central pair of the tail feathers is about 12cm longer than the other tail feathers. <NFemales and young birds have a grayish belly and less white on crown and young birds lack the elongated central tail feathers. Calls are a breezy "wiee" or "wiu", "duwiii", and a "wi-didiwi", all very distinctive. Forages by employing aerial hawks from dead branches or tree tops usually high in the canopy. Relatively common in pairs in canopy of mature secondary and primary forest.
