The account

Description

20 cm. The tail of male in breeding plumage is an additional 11 cm long. Bill yellow.

Male is black above with a gray rump. Scapulars white. Edges of wing coverts and flight feathers white. Throat pink, without feathers. Breast band black. Belly white. On the male's tail the outer pair of rectrices very elongated and reduced to the shaft at the proximal end; the distal end of the feathers has a broadened inner web which is turned 90° so that the elongated tail feathers are perpendicular and held below the rest of the tail.

Female is dark buffy above. Wings and tail darker. Below creamy white with a buffy breast band. The outer tail feathers are brown and somewhat shorter than in the male and form two round terminal racquets.

Behavior

Perches on tall grass stems, fence or shrub making aerial hawks and perch-to-ground sallies (⁴⁴).

Habitat and status

Rare in damp undisturbed grasslands and marshes with shrubs. Globally this species qualifies as 'vulnerable' due to extensive habitat loss (¹⁰³). It is probably now extinct in Brazil.

Paraguay, Argentina and Rio Grande do Sul. Reported from São Paulo State (³⁰).
