12 cm. A specialized grass tyrant with highly developed sexual dimorphism. In both sexes the bill is yellowish. <NMale is black above with white cheeks, throat and belly. Rump gray. A black patch on the side of the breast. Secondaries with white patch.<N The tail of the adult male may reach 19 cm and has the two center rectrices turned by 90<91> which then rise in a cocked position above the head level. The lateral rectrices form a steep plane on either side of the central tail feathers. <NThe female and young are buffy brown, mottled darker above with a prominent white superciliary stripe. The wings are darker, the primaries and tertiaries with white fringes, the secondaries rusty-brown. Below white with a buff wash and a brown patch on the sides of the breast. Tail is short and has a normal shape.
Usually silent. During courtship flight the male produces a soft "tic..tic..tic" ^30 .
Frequently seen perching high on a long grass stem and changing location with an undulating and weak flight. Seems to occur in small groups with males rare. An aerial hawker ^74 . This species is listed as "vulnerable" as it undergoes extensive and continuing habitat loss ^103 .
Local and rare in open protected grassland with scattered low bushes.
Old sites mentioned by Pinto ^40 near Guarulhos and Ipiranga are now part of the city of S<C4>o Paulo and probably do not exist any more. <8E>Itirapina<8E>has a good population of this species. It might occur closer to the coast in suitable habitat.
