11 cm. A striking looking stocky flycatcher of marshes. Bill black, the mandible with a yellow base. Crested, with a white head and black body, the male is unmistakable. <NFemale is light grayish-brown above with a white front of head. Wings and tail black. Below white with a grayish belly. Call a high "zii" repeated every 5 seconds or so. Perches in reeds and cattails in marshes. Performs aerial hawks and perch to ground sallies. Regularly seen in marshes and grasslands Throughout. In Rio de Janeiro State reported from<8E>Cantagalo, Sepetiba<8E>. In S<C4>o Paulo State reported from<8E>Iguape, Piquete, Monte Alegre, Bebedouro, and<8E>Olimpia ^40 .
