13 cm. A spectacular long legged marsh tyrant. Both sexes have yellow wattles around the eye and a yellow iris. <NMale is black with white primaries. <NFemale is grayish-brown with streaks on the back and chest. Wings with two buff wing bars and rusty primaries forming a patch. Belly yellowish. Sick ^30 reports that it performs perpendicular flight 5-10 meters into the air in the breeding season which produces a loud humming sound. Then throws itself on back and does a somersault. Finally, while descending gives a "zheeee". Perches on low shrubs or fences. Walks and hops over mud. Catches insects on the ground and in flight ^30 . Extralimital. An inhabitant of marshes and open shrubby areas near water. Santa Catarina. On migration in Rio de Janeiro state ^30 and S<C4>o Paulo state ^44 .
