18 cm. A conspicuously crested black flycatcher. Crest long and thin. Bill black. Eye dark red or brown. Both the male and female are glossy blue-black with a white band across the base of primaries. Bigger than other Knipolegus species. Silent. Sick ^30 mentions a night song which is bisyllablic, composed of a modulated, ascending note and a modulated descending note with a short trill-"dewEE-kwirr" . Performs aerial hawks from low vantage points and does near ground sallies to catch arthropods. Also takes fruits. Fairly common in open country with shrubby vegetation and scattered trees. Ascends in the mountains to the bush zone. Throughout the area, Angra dos Reis, Itatiaia etc. to about 1800 meters. 12307 >:
