The account

Description

15 cm.

Male is glossy black with no white in the wings. Bill bluish with black tip. Eye bright red.

Female has a rufous crown and rump. Bill black. Eye brown. Back brown. Wings black with two buff wing bars. Below buffy-white with coarse brown streaks. Crissum rufous. Tail black, the feathers edged rufous.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Usually silent. Makes a single 'clik' note, several times repeated.

Behavior

Usually remains within dense vegetation, but sometimes sits exposed and engages in aerial hawking. Also performs near ground sallies. Often quite inconspicuous.

Habitat and status

The common black flycatcher of the uplands. Uncommon to common in brushy campo, forest border and low open forest.

Serra do Mar (Serra Bocaina, Serra de Caraguatuba), Serra Mantiqueira (Itatiaia, Campos do Jordão) and Serra dos Orgãos (¹⁵). To 2200 meters (⁴⁴).
