15 cm. <NMale is glossy black with no white in the wings. Bill bluish with black tip. Eye bright red. <NFemale has a rufous crown and rump. Bill black. Eye brown. Back brown. Wings black with two buff wing bars. Below buffy-white with coarse brown streaks. Crissum rufous. Tail black, the feathers edged rufous. Usually silent. Makes a single "clik" note, several times repeated. Usually remains within dense vegetation, but sometimes sits exposed and engages in aerial hawking. Also performs near ground sallies. Often quite inconspicuous. The common black flycatcher of the uplands. Uncommon to common in brushy campo, forest border and low open forest.
