19 cm. A conspicuous flycatcher of the campos. Head white with a grayish hue on the neck. Light brown above. Rump and upper half of the tail white: lower half of the tail black. Wings black with white bases to the flight feathers which show in flight as a broad white band. White rims to the inner secondaries and the tertials. Below white.
I have never heard a sound from this species. Sick mentions a dawn song, a monotonous song "jew" repeated at intervals of 1 -5 seconds: infrequently this whistle is also heard at night when it is easily confused with an insect voice. ^30 .
Forages by perch to ground sallies in open country. Hovers a lot. Also seen near farms perching on top of telephone poles, fences and bushes. Conspicuous and not particularly shy.
Not uncommon in campo with bushes and low trees, also in Eucalyptus. More common inland.
