14 cm. The male is mostly scarlet with a black mask and upperparts. Tertials with white tips. <NThe female is grayish brown above with darker wings and tail. Throat and breast whitish-buff, the breast with black streaks. Belly and crissum reddish-pink. Song remotely resembling that of /Hemitriccus margariteiventer , is a repeated "tik tik tiri". Call is a high "psii...psii...psii...". Forages in open country as a near ground generalist ^74 performing aerial hawks and perch to ground sallies.
