13 cm. Above olive-brown. A narrow yellow eye ring and a very weak superciliary stripe. Blackish-brown wings with two buffy bars. Throat yellow. Olive-brown below with the belly pale buff-yellow. Tail brown. A characteristic sound of the southeast Brazilian rain forest, the call is usually a rough low "ziu...ziuziuziu.." with emphasis on the first syllable, the "ziu" frequently delivered alone. Song is a "ziu...ziwit......ziu...ziwit...." Forages between 1-10 meters within forest. Hawks from enclosed perches. Engages in aerial hawks in more open environments. Nest is in a tree cavity ^106 . A common flycatcher of secondary and primary humid forest interiors. Does not favor forest borders.
