17 cm. Slender with long wings and tail. White eye ring. Reddish-brown above with a cinnamon rufous rump and upper part of tail. Wings black, the feathers with rusty edges, the basal part of the tertiaries cinnamon rufous forming a patch. Throat buff whitish with darker vermiculation. Below rufous.
Not very vocal, the call is "wee-dirrrrrr".
Perches on top of cliffs, on gables of houses, performs almost exclusively aerial hawks ^74 .

Regularly encountered near cliffs and road cuts, rocky canyons and rocky outcroppings.
Throughout, below 2000 meters. Rio de Janeiro State reported from<8E>Cantagalo, Nova Friburgo, Teresopolis, Taipu, Ilha Grande, Marambaia, Itatiaia , S<C4>o Paulo State reported from<8E>S<C4>o Sebasti<C4>o, Iguape<8E>and further inland, ;^40= .
The form occuring in Southeast Brazil bellicosa is morphologically distinct from the other subspecies and might be a separate species.
