The account

Description

16 cm. Long dark bill. Expanded crest consists of red feathers with black spots and shiny steel-blue tips. Brown above. Rump and tail rust-colored. Below ochraceous-buff. Legs yellow.

Where it was recorded

The discs' own checklists select Royal Flycatcher at 8 localities.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Call is a loud, repeated "pri-o".

Behavior

Moves about inconspicuously at eye-level to 4 meters in primary and secondary rain forest undergrowth, frequently adjacent to forest brooks and streams. Performs upward strikes (⁷⁴). The function of stunning crest is unclear. It may be used in threat behavior.

Breeding

A long pouch with a side entrance suspended over a stream or trail (⁷⁷, ⁴⁴).

Habitat and status

A forest flycatcher fond of brooks. Rare in the interior of rain forest. This species is listed as 'endangered' because of its very small and highly fragmented range (¹⁰³).

Distribution

Throughout. Reported by Pinto (⁴⁰) from Rio de Janeiro state (Serra dos Orgãos, Nova Friburgo, Cantagalo, Macaé) and São Paulo state (Serra do Mar,Piedade, Bauré, Serra de Bananal). Repeatedly observed by me in PE Jacupiranga close to the Caverna do Diabo. To 1200 meters (⁴⁴).

Taxonomy notes

Analysis of the morphological differences of the subspecies yielded no information as to whether the form swainsoni, the Atlantic Royal Flycatcher of Southeast Brazil, should be treated as a separate species (¹⁰²).
