16 cm. Long dark bill. Expanded crest consists of red feathers with black spots and shiny steel-blue tips. Brown above. Rump and tail rust-colored. Below ochraceous-buff. Legs yellow. Call is a loud, repeated pri-o . Moves about inconspicuously at eye-level to 4 meters in primary and secondary rain forest undergrowth, frequently adjacent to forest brooks and streams. Performs upward strikes ^74 . The function of stunning crest is unclear. It may be used in threat behavior. A long pouch with a side entrance suspended over a stream or trail ^77, ^44 . A forest flycatcher fond of brooks. Rare in the interior of rain forest. This species is listed as "endangered" because of its very small and highly fragmented range ^103 . Throughout. Analysis of the morphological differences of the subspecies yielded no information as to whether the form /swainsoni , the Atlantic Royal Flycatcher of Southeast Brazil, should be treated as a separate species ^102 . 4828 Call.
