11 cm. Has a bright yellow flat bill with a brown ridge. Above olive-brown. Supraloral spot, narrow eye ring and concealed coronal patch white. Inconspicuous black eye stripe, ear spot and malar stripe. Wing coverts and flight feathers broadly edged rufous. Throat white. Breast almost as olive-brown as the back. Belly yellowish. Legs yellow.
Call is a repeated "tiu.....tiu.....tiu......"
Forages close to the ground within open rain forest.
A cup nest was found in the Estancia Parabel, Parcque National San Rafael, Paraguay, on November 4, 1996 about 2.45 meters above ground in the fork of a sapling in tall rainforest with scant undergrowth ^87 .
An extremely rare large spadebill of southeastern Brazil in the undergrowth of relatively open high rain forest. Within Brazil this species is clearly highly endangered.
Occurs at very low densities in the Serra do Mar Boraceia, Ubatuba, ^15 . I know of no records from Jureia, Iguape or PE Jacupiranga. To 900 meters.
