The account

Description

11 cm. Has a bright yellow flat bill with a brown ridge. Above olive-brown. Supraloral spot, narrow eye ring and concealed coronal patch white. Inconspicuous black eye stripe, ear spot and malar stripe. Wing coverts and flight feathers broadly edged rufous. Throat white. Breast almost as olive-brown as the back. Belly yellowish. Legs yellow.

Where it was recorded

The discs' own checklists select Russet-winged Spadebill at 8 localities.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Forages close to the ground within open rain forest.

Breeding

A cup nest was found in the Estancia Parabel, Parcque National San Rafael, Paraguay, on November 4, 1996 about 2.45 meters above ground in the fork of a sapling in tall rainforest with scant undergrowth (⁸⁷).

Habitat and status

An extremely rare large spadebill of southeastern Brazil in the undergrowth of relatively open high rain forest. Within Brazil this species is clearly highly endangered.

Distribution

Occurs at very low densities in the Serra do Mar (Boraceia, Ubatuba, ¹⁵). I know of no records from Jureia, Iguape or PE Jacupiranga. To 900 meters.
