The account

Description

14 cm. Iris dark brown. Mandible flesh-colored. Head grayish with an olive crest. A white superciliary stripe ending behind the eye, and a black eye stripe ending in a black crescent shaped ear spot coming together with a blackish malar stripe. Cheeks are variably grizzled with gray on yellowish ground. Above olive-green. Wings black with 2 yellow wing bars and yellow margins to the flight feathers. Below yellow, the chest and belly with a strong olive-gray wash. Tail rather long.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Call in southeast Brazil is a characteristic rasping 'zreeip.....zrreeiip......' ending in a higher pitch and frequently repeated several times.

Behavior

Forages in the sub-canopy of trees by upward striking for prey. Singly or in pairs. Does not follow mixed bird parties.

Breeding

A nest pocket with a side entrance hanging from a branch found in the Serra das Rosas near Patrocinio Paulista, Northern São Paulo state, was close to a big wasp nest (November 8, 1998, Remold, H.G.).

Habitat and status

A common flycatcher of the forest edge but relatively local. In the canopy and sub-canopy of humid forest borders and open forest. Enters forests along roads. Sometimes in high bushy habitat but mostly associated with larger trees.
