14 cm. Iris dark brown. Mandible flesh-colored. Head grayish with an olive crest. A white superciliary stripe ending behind the eye, and a black eye stripe ending in a black crescent shaped ear spot coming together with a blackish malar stripe. Cheeks are variably grizzled with gray on yellowish ground. Above olive-green. Wings black with 2 yellow wing bars and yellow margins to the flight feathers. Below yellow, the chest and belly with a strong olive-gray wash. Tail rather long. Call in southeast Brazil is a characteristic rasping "zreeip.....zrreeiip......" ending in a higher pitch and frequently repeated several times. Forages in the sub-canopy of trees by upward striking for prey. Singly or in pairs. Does not follow mixed bird parties. A nest pocket with a side entrance hanging from a branch found in the Serra das Rosas near Patrocinio Paulista, Northern S<C4>o Paulo state, was close to a big wasp nest November 8, 1998, Remold, H.G. . A common flycatcher of the forest edge but relatively local. In the canopy and sub-canopy of humid forest borders and open forest. Enters forests along roads.
