10 cm. Buff brown above with a semi-concealed reddish crown patch. Below grayish buffy white. Belly yellow. The call is a typical fast distinct 4 syllable sequence, like "pletiretrik". Also a fast sequence of "tritritri..." becoming louder and softer at times. Open country, perches in low scrub. The nest of /Euscarthmus is a rather frail open cup ^86 . A little tyrant flycatcher of open arid country. Forages by perch-gleaning ^74 usually concealed in dense scrub close to the ground. Mostly extralimital in dry forests and arid scrubby areas of Estado S<C4>o Paulo, Minas Gerais Vargem Alegre and Rio de Janeiro ^40 . Mostly inland and far away from the coast <8E>S<C4>o Jeronimo, Bebedouro, Salto Grande, S<C4>o Jose do Rio Pardo, S<C4>o Paulo and from Muriae in Rio de Janeiro . This flycatcher might occur closer to the coast in suitable habitat.
