How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

The call is a typical fast distinct 4 syllable sequence, like 'pletiretrik'. Also a fast sequence of 'tritritri...' becoming louder and softer at times.

Behavior

Open country, perches in low scrub.

Breeding

The nest of Euscarthmus is a rather frail open cup (⁸⁶).

Habitat and status

A little tyrant flycatcher of open arid country. Forages by perch-gleaning (⁷⁴) usually concealed in dense scrub close to the ground.

Distribution

Mostly extralimital in dry forests and arid scrubby areas of Estado São Paulo, Minas Gerais (Vargem Alegre) and Rio de Janeiro (⁴⁰). Mostly inland and far away from the coast (São Jeronimo, Bebedouro, Salto Grande, São Jose do Rio Pardo, São Paulo and from Muriae in Rio de Janeiro). This flycatcher might occur closer to the coast in suitable habitat.

Taxonomy notes

The taxonomic position of Euscarthmus is unclear, syrinx morphology links this genus with the Elaenia assemblage of Lanyon (⁸⁶).
