9 cm. A scarce tiny short-tailed flycatcher of the highly threatened campo cerrado. Indication of a crest. Above cinnamon-brown, rump lighter. Crown grayish with darker elongated feathers and a concealed white patch. White short superciliary stripe. Lower sides of head and throat streaked black and white in the male. Wings black with two buff-yellow wing bars. Below cinnamon-brown on chest, belly buff-white. <NFemale has a brown crown streaked blackish, the cheeks finely streaked dark brown, but otherwise lacks the black and white throat streakings. <NJuveniles have reddish in the primaries, buffy wing bars and yellow undersides.
Flight song "wee zi zi zrre" or "zi zi zi zi zrre", described by Willis as "tee tee tee teet" followed by an short grasshopper-like "wing buzz" at the apex of a 20-100 meters flight to 10 meters above the ground ^79 . I have heard the song in cut 1 also from a perched male. <NWillis says that the song without the buzz at the end is given inside or atop a low bush before sunrise in springtime. Earlier still, in the near-dark, unseen birds circle slowly in the sky, repeating their songs and buzzes every 3 sec . Also A short "peewee" when in small groups. Before feeding, an adult gave a faint "chup-chup, seet-seet".
