The account

Description

10 cm. A small green long-tailed Phylloscartes flycatcher of primary forest. Olive green above, the cheeks, lores and narrow superciliary stripe yellow, A narrow black malar stripe and ear crescent. Wings dusky greenish lacking distinct wing bars. Below dull yellow, clouded olive on the breast.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

The call is a hard 'tsi-eet' with emphasis on the first syllable or a 'tsi-i-eet' consisting of three syllables.

Behavior

Forages in the interior of rain forest at medium to low level from 2-6 meters.

Breeding

On October 21, 1994 we found a nest of this species hanging over a small river in dense secondary rain forest on the Ilha do Cardoso. The nest was a pocket with a side entrance (Remold HG, Ramos Neto M, Mueller F, unpubl.).

Habitat and status

Locally common in the interior of dense humid secondary and primary rain forest. This species is listed as 'vulnerable' because of the large reduction of suitable habitat (¹⁰³).

Distribution

Almost endemic to Brazil. Encountered near Parati, Ubatuba, Fazenda Intervales, Ilha do Cardoso and in PE Jacupiranga and Jureia State Parks. To 800 meters at Fazenda Intervales.
