10 cm. A neat little tyrant flycatcher of the uplands. Bill thin and black. head and neck olive-grayish with a white superciliary stripe and a characteristic semi-concealed white crest spot. Above olive-grayish. Wings blackish with two white wingbars. White throat. Below a grayish-white chest and white belly with a suffusion of yellow. A series of high "psee" sounds like "pseeseeseeseeseeseeseesee...". Song is a long series of high calls, like "titititititititititittitititititi". A perch gleaner in the canopy, but also lower. Forages very actively singly or in pairs. Not uncommon in open forest, Araucaria woods, forest border and gallery forest. Throughout, but I have not seen it close to the coast. Seems to be most common in the altiplano 700-2000 meters , the Serra do Mar and<8E>Serra Mantiqueira, but Pinto reports it at sea level from<8E>S<C4>o Sebasti<C4>o 1896, ^40 .
