9 cm. Sexes alike. Bill thick, with the lower mandible yellowish-pink. Appears slightly crested. Above light olive buff-brown with a weak superciliary eye stripe, and a narrow white eye ring. Wings dusky with two ochraceous wing bars. Below light olive-gray, throat brightest. Tail often cocked. call a high "ewit" ^30 , "toree...toree" and "feeee" ^44 , Song or call a descending series of "wi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi". Dawn song a series of six notes on the same pitch with the emphasis on the fifth note " hi hi hi hi HI hi" cut 1 and 3 . Perch-gleans with short hops and flights foraging in trees and high scrub at all levels, seasonally frugivorous ^74 . Perch-gleaners cover in their pursuits only the area they can reach without sallying. Chooses more open habitat, such as forest edge and groups of trees and forest edge. Often in mixed flocks. Within the Elaenia group of open cup nesters ^86 the domed nest of this species indicates a further specialization of the nest design. A discussion of the evolution of the nests of the /Tyrannidae is in ^106. Fairly regular at edge of open forest, gardens, gallery forest, capoeira. Avoids interior of rain forest.
