The account
Description
11 cm + 2 cm tail. Orange iris.
Male has a deep red patch on fore crown and is otherwise black above with a scarlet lower back and rump. The wings have olive-brown tertials. Cheeks pale gray. Below whitish with the flanks striped coarsely black. Tail black, the two center rectrices pointed and elongated.
Female is olive-green, the sides of head and throat gray. Below grayish-olive, the belly paler. The central tail feathers are somewhat elongated. The typical head shape of the female, with a steep front and flat back of head is also diagnostic.

How the map was made
The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.
The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice
The vocalization of the males at the leck is a descending high 'si..si..si.si.sisisisisisisi'. During jump-flight male utters a 'prrrrAK' (30) "like a stick being run along an iron grating" (listen to very beginning of sound track # 2!). Also makes a sound like 'zrt... zrt....', probably with the wings.
Behavior
Occurs in middle and upper stratum of trees. Follows mixed bird parties. Feeds on fruits.
Habitat and status
Relatively common, but local, in the interior of primary humid forest or secondary mature forest and less frequently at forest borders.
Distribution
Throughout. Serra dos Orgãos, Serra Mantiqueira, Serra do Mar (15) south to the Parana border (PE Jacupiranga, Fazenda Intervales etc.). Mostly 500-1200 meters (Serra Bocaina).

The work was published on three discs — Disc 2 in 2001, Disc 3 in 2006 and Disc 1 in 2011. Where they differ, that is a difference between historical releases, and it is never merged away. The 2011 disc is not treated as correcting the earlier ones.
