The account

Description

9 cm. Both sexes have bright orange legs.

The male is black above with a slate-gray rump. White collar. White throat, sometimes puffed out. Rest of the underside grayish.

The female is olive-green above, yellowish green below, towards the throat becoming light gray. The bright pale yellow bend of the wing frequently visible. Female of Chiroxiphia caudata is larger and olive below as on the back, with lighter horn-colored bill.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

During his display the male produces very loud whip-lash like or fireworks-like like snaps. These are intermingled with 'peearr' and 'peeooo' calls. The call of both sexes is a short "chiurr" (cut #2). Also a loud 'huit..... huit.... huit...'.

Behavior

Forages in the lower stratum of dense thickets. Sally gleans for fruits etc. from a low perch. During the noisy display the male moves very quickly back and forth between a pair of upright twigs and slides up and down a twig with wings spread out (⁴⁴).

Habitat and status

Rather common in the undergrowth of thickets and secondary overgrown forest and borders and also in restinga forest.

Throughout. Serra do Mar, Serra Mantiqueira and Serra dos Orgãos (¹⁵) south to the Parana border. To 1000 meters.
