9 cm. Both sexes have bright orange legs. <NThe male is black above with a slate-gray rump. White collar. White throat, sometimes puffed out. Rest of the underside grayish. <NThe female is olive-green above, yellowish green below, towards the throat becoming light gray. The bright pale yellow bend of the wing frequently visible. Female of /Chiroxiphia caudata is larger and olive below as on the back, with lighter horn-colored bill. During his display the male produces very loud whip-lash like or fireworks-like like snaps. These are intermingled with "peearr" and "peeooo" calls. The call of both sexes is a short chiurr cut 2 . Also a loud "huit..... huit.... huit...". Forages in the lower stratum of dense thickets. Sally gleans for fruits etc. from a low perch. During the noisy display the male moves very quickly back and forth between a pair of upright twigs and slides up and down a twig with wings spread out ^44 .
