21 cm. Unmistakable. A chunky, rather big cotingid. Iris chestnut. <NMale"s head, neck and breast are black. Collar and the rest of underparts bright yellow. Mantle chestnut-brown, olive on rump. Tail and wings black with olive edging, the wings with two yellow wing bars. <NFemale has a dark olive head, breast and neck. Mantle olive and chestnut. Flanks vermiculated olive. Call, a characteristic of the higher regions of the Serra do Mar and Mantiqueira, is a short dove-like 4-syllable whistle "wee-ok---wee-o", often with the last syllable emphasized. Forages most frequently in mid level of canopy, but sometimes descends to eye level and lower to pick berries. Usually well concealed and difficult to observe.
