21 cm. A striking and unmistakable cotinga with a long forked tail. Bill and legs yellow. Black crown bordered on each side by a wide gray stripe. Semi-concealed maroon coronal patch. Above yellowish coarsely barred black. Wings and tail black with a bluish hue. Throat yellow. Breast white, coarsely barred black. Belly pale yellow spotted black. <NFemale has a shorter tail and more olive on the wings and tail ^44 .
Usually silent. According to Sick ^79 makes a guttural whistle "ghewt.... ghewt...".
Perches high on dead branches. Feeds mainly on mistletoe berries by sally gleaning.
Nest is small and situated on a horizontal branch of a free standing tree e. g. at Fazenda Intervales October 2000, see picture .
Uncommon in forest borders and open lightly wooded areas, clearings and residential areas with scattered trees and bushes.
