The account
Description
21 cm. A striking and unmistakable cotinga with a long forked tail. Bill and legs yellow. Black crown bordered on each side by a wide gray stripe. Semi-concealed maroon coronal patch. Above yellowish coarsely barred black. Wings and tail black with a bluish hue. Throat yellow. Breast white, coarsely barred black. Belly pale yellow spotted black.
Female has a shorter tail and more olive on the wings and tail (44).

How the map was made
The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.
The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice
Usually silent. According to Sick (79) makes a guttural whistle 'ghewt.... ghewt...'.
Behavior
Perches high on dead branches. Feeds mainly on mistletoe berries by sally gleaning.
Breeding
Nest is small and situated on a horizontal branch of a free standing tree (e. g. at Fazenda Intervales October 2000, see picture).
Habitat and status
Uncommon in forest borders and open lightly wooded areas, clearings and residential areas with scattered trees and bushes.
Distribution
Serra do Mar, Serra dos Orgãos, Serra Mantiqueira, Campos do Jordão, Fazenda Intervales etc. Relatively common in the Serra Bocaina. From 800-1400 meters.

A nesting tree. At Fazenda Intervales the lowest branch of the tree on the right side of the building supported an active nest of Phibalura flavirostris. One of the birds incubated the eggs, even when a lot of people were present in front of the house. Disc 3 · 2006

The work was published on three discs — Disc 2 in 2001, Disc 3 in 2006 and Disc 1 in 2011. Where they differ, that is a difference between historical releases, and it is never merged away. The 2011 disc is not treated as correcting the earlier ones.
