In 1997 a new species, Scytalopus iraiensis, Tall-grass Wetland Tapaculo, Macuquinho-da-varzea, was discovered in wetlands with dense brush and tall-grass meadows of the Rio Irai in the outskirts of Curitiba, Estado Parana, only about 100 km south of our area. The males of this species are similar to the males of Scytalopus speluncae, but have a black back and a grey belly and different vocalization. This species is severely threatened, because all three locations in the vicinity of Curitiba, where it has been found, are subject to habitat destruction ^72 . 9992 Song, Nucleo Sta.
