The account

Description

7.1" Crown and neck grayish. Above olive-brown, scaled blackish with buff shafts of the feathers. Wings rufous-brown, the feathers tipped buff. A white malar streak. Throat dark brown with white shaft streaks and a white throat patch. Chest to belly buff brown with brown scaling. Tail rufous.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Song 'du- du- du- du WOO- WOO- WOO- WOO-WOO- wo', deep and quite loud.

Behavior

Very shy, hops on the floor of dense forest, on roots and logs.

Breeding

Nests are in open cavities on top of broken tree trunks 2.5 meters high from the ground. (Iguazu National Park, Argentina, November/December 1998, ⁶⁸)

Habitat and status

Regularly heard, in dense undergrowth of secondary and primary rain forest. Dense forests of the coast and the Serras.

Distribution

Up to 1600 meters in the Serra Mantiqueira.
