19-19.5 cm. Probably not distinguishable in the field from campanisoma and meruloides. Distinguishing characteristics are a black and small bill. No black spots on the forehead. Throat unspotted. Above reddish-brown including the tail. Sides of abdomen heavily streaked. Crissum barred. Tail long without a pale tip. The best criterion to determine the species. The song, a rising short trill 950-1350 hz lasting for 4-5 seconds ^67 , is the shortest song of the three Chamaeza species. A rail-like walker of the forest floor. Common in high mountain forest and scrub. In the <8E>Serra Mantiqueira, Serra dos Org<C4>os, Serra Bocaina, and above<8E>Campos do Jord<C4>o<8E>. From 1000-2200 meters Ridgely and Tudor . Probably distinct on the species level from /Chamaeza turdina in Colombia and /Chamaeza chionogaster in Venezuela which have completely different vocalizations ^67 . 9049 Song.
