The account

Description

19-19.5 cm. Probably not distinguishable in the field from campanisoma and meruloides. Distinguishing characteristics are a black and small bill. No black spots on the forehead. Throat unspotted. Above reddish-brown including the tail. Sides of abdomen heavily streaked. Crissum barred. Tail long without a pale tip.

Where it was recorded

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

The best criterion to determine the species. The song, a rising short trill (950-1350 hz) lasting for 4-5 seconds (⁶⁷), is the shortest song of the three Chamaeza species.

Behavior

A rail-like walker of the forest floor.

Habitat and status

Common in high mountain forest and scrub.

Distribution

In the Serra Mantiqueira, Serra dos Orgãos, Serra Bocaina, and above Campos do Jordão. From 1000-2200 meters (Ridgely and Tudor).

Taxonomy notes

Probably distinct on the species level from Chamaeza turdina in Colombia and Chamaeza chionogaster in Venezuela which have completely different vocalizations (⁶⁷).
