19-19.5cm. The three sibling species of the genus Chamaeza that occur in southeastern Brazil are probably not distinguishable in the field. All are brownish above and whitish buff below with coarse streaks and speckles. All have a buffy loral spot, streaks behind the eye and cheek spot. Campanisoma has short tail with pale tip and blackish subterminal bar. Bill pale, black spot on forehead. Back olive-brown, crown more rusty. Small black speckles on white throat. Abdomen streaked. Under tail coverts buff with a few faint dark bars. Song otus-like whistles in a series lasting about 15 sec, often with about 3 to 4 low descending "wak wak wak" sounds at the end of song. Alarm call a "huit" which is sometimes delivered in a series. Walks rail-like on the floor of dense forest and thickets. In primary and secondary woodland.
