11 cm. Male has a black crown and back with white spots and a broad white superciliary. Wings black with two white wing-bars. Throat, chest, and belly white with big black spotting. Tail black with obvious white cross-bands. <NThe female is similar to the male, but the flanks are buff and it is generally brown instead of black and buff instead of white, with exception of the throat, chest and belly which are white with fainter streaking. Song is a slow and high, a little bit squeaky "seeeei seeei seeei seeeei", somewhat descending. A descending series of clear whistles " di di du du du" or "whit whit di dududu" track 3 may also be a song. Calls a "whit whit" or "whit". Hops around in lower growth of forest. Locally common in the lower growth of humid primary and secondary forest and forest borders. Prefers the forest interior and is not found in scrub away from forest. Throughout to 500 meters Fazenda Intervales . A typical Atlantic forest species not found far away from the coast.
