5 , 12.5 cm. Male similar to the interposita race of the extralimital Formicivora serrana occuring in Northern Estado Rio de Janeiro and Southern Minas Gerais, very dark, black below, dark brown above, with white narrow fringes on side of body often not visible, no white fringe on head. White spots on the wing covers small, tail feathers with small terminal white tips. Female above rufous brown, white superciliary and black cheeks, below buffy. Song a fast series of low pitched tchiuk notes, calls high pitched kiu-kiu-kiu ^65 . Foraging in pairs in lower stratum of open dry forest and scrub. Nest June to November, two eggs. Common in dry restinga scrub containing cacti and bromeliads consisting of vegetated zones 30-80 sqm separated by a 5-15 meters expanse of sand area. Coastal central Estado Rio de Janeiro, near sea level only around<8E>Cabo Frio<8E>. Principally within an 80 km stretch of the coast between<8E>Saquarema<8E>and Cabo Frio ^65 . Endangered, due to its small range and loss of habitat due to development. Originally described as a subspecies of Formicivora serrana ^104 .
