14 cm. Male has a gray forehead. Weak short whitish superciliary and crescent below the eye. Crown, hindneck and upperparts chestnut olive. Wings black, the primaries and secondaries edged chestnut olive, the wing coverts black, tipped white. Tail graduated, black. Side of head, throat, breast and belly lead gray. Faint light grizzling on the cheeks. Flanks and crissum olive brown. <NThe female is like the male, but the throat, chest and belly are whitish with broad black streaks. Prominent white superciliary from the bill to above the eye. Song a sequence of double notes "tjup-ti tjup-ti tjup-ti . . . . " Series of notes uneven and variable.
