14 cm. Male has a gray forehead. Weak short whitish superciliary and crescent below the eye. Crown, hindneck and upperparts chestnut olive. Wings black, the primaries and secondaries edged chestnut olive, the wing coverts black, tipped white. Tail graduated, black. Side of head, throat, breast and belly lead gray. Faint light grizzling on the cheeks. Flanks and crissum olive brown. <NThe female is like the male, but the throat, chest and belly are whitish with broad black streaks. Prominent white superciliary from the bill to above the eye. Song a sequence of double notes "tjup-ti tjup-ti tjup-ti . . . . " Series of notes uneven and variable. Calls squealing notes ranging in length to 0.35 s. ^132 . Pairs or groups forage from 0-2 meters above ground in reed beds and other low vegetation. Locally not uncommon in littoral marshes dominated by /Typha dominguensis, Asteraceae and /Poacea , also in bushy wet meadows, riverine marshes, and mangrove swamps. This species is known only from a small area in coastal Parana and Santa Catarina, SE-Brazil from sea level. It was discovered in 1995 ^134 in the lower third of the rivers Guaragua and Nhudiaquara in the Bay of Parnagua. Subsequently the species was found around Mathinos and Guaratuba, Parana and near Garuva, Santa Catarina. Around Guaratuba known from Ilha do Chapeu, Chapeuzinho and the lower thirds of the S<C4>o Joao, Cubatao, S<C4>o Joazinho, Descoberto, Boguacu, Preto, Parado and Alegre rivers ^135 . Not known from Estado S<C4>o Paulo. To be looked for in the area around<8E>Cananeia, Col. Santa Maria, and<8E>Ariri<8E>in Typha swamps. Moved into the genus Formicivora ^136 .
