9 cm. Male above dark rust-brown. Forehead grizzled with slaty gray. Wings black, the borders of the primaries, secondaries and tertials rusty, and the coverts with 2 buff wing bars. Throat black, the feathers with white tips giving the throat a stippled appearance. Below slaty gray, the sides of belly and crissum rufous-brown. <NThe white spots on the throat are larger in the females. Song is a repeated descending "zriu zriu zriu zriu...", 5-12 times. Call a harsh chatter ^44 . Forages on or close to the ground in pairs or groups. Rather common inside humid primary or secondary forest. Frequently in dark narrow ravines close to waterfalls and brooks. Throughout. Common near<8E>Ubatuba, PE Jacupiranga, Fazenda Intervales<8E>.
