15 cm. Male has black crown with the sides of head striped black and white. Plain chestnut back, wings and tail. Throat striped black on white. Below strongly barred black on white. <NFemale is like the male, but with a chestnut-brown crown. <NImmature has brown vermiculations on the mantle ^30 . a series of 10-13 ascending and accelerating "wak" notes that drop in pitch at the end. Call a typical "a-EE, kew-EE" ^30 . Usually foraging low in dense scrub and bushes. Not uncommon in dense secondary scrub and forest borders. Also in shady secondary woodland ^30 . Local resident in the Serra do Mar and near <8E>Rio de Janeiro<8E>. Uncommon in the <8E>Serra dos Org<C4>os<8E> ^15, ^30 . In city parks in trees with dense canopy ^30 .
