The account

Description

15 cm. Male has black crown with the sides of head striped black and white. Plain chestnut back, wings and tail. Throat striped black on white. Below strongly barred black on white.

Female is like the male, but with a chestnut-brown crown.

Immature has brown vermiculations on the mantle (³⁰).

Where it was recorded

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

a series of 10-13 ascending and accelerating 'wak' notes that drop in pitch at the end. Call a typical 'a-EE, kew-EE' (³⁰).

Behavior

Usually foraging low in dense scrub and bushes.

Habitat and status

Not uncommon in dense secondary scrub and forest borders. Also in shady secondary woodland (³⁰).

Distribution

Local resident in the Serra do Mar and near Rio de Janeiro. Uncommon in the Serra dos Orgãos (¹⁵, ³⁰). In city parks in trees with dense canopy (³⁰). To about 800 meters.
