15 cm. Male has a solid black crest. Iris yellow. Back barred white on black. Throat narrowly striped black on white. Below white, narrowly barred black. <NFemale is also crested with a rusty unstriped crown . Above rusty-cinnamon. Throat whitish. Cheeks and nape striped blackish. Below buff-yellow. Song is a series of nasal accelerating notes "na na na na na na nananana aah" with a strong emphasis on the last note. Calls of growling and guttural notes ^44 , also a "di-oo" ^30 . The song can also be heard on the CD ^38 Pairs forage low in thickets and scrub, sometimes appearing on top or outside of a bush. Inhabits thickets and forest borders, caatinga and swamp land. Inland in Estado S<C4>o Paulo e.g. <8E>Itirapina, Jaboticabal, S<C4>o Jeronymo, Rio Tiet<CB> , Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro rare in the <8E>Serra Mantiqueira<8E> . Not found close to the coast.
