19 cm. Male is black above with white drop-shaped spots. Wings and tail black, banded with white. Below white, the lateral chest feathers with black rims. Belly and crissum ochraceous. <NThe female is buffy with white areas. Song is a fast series of high whistles, unlike any other antshrike, lasting for 4-6 sec. Calls are a piercing "pyeeeeeeyeuw" and an abrupt "chrrt" ^44 . Forages in the mid-canopy of humid forest usually in dense foliage. Solitary or in pairs. A canopy-dwelling antshrike of the Atlantic forest region. Relatively common in humid primary and secondary dense forest and borders. Throughout the area. Most common in the Serra do Mar between Rio de Janeiro and S<C4>o Paulo: less so in the <8E>Serra Mantiqueira<8E>. Also south of S<C4>o Paulo, e. g. near <8E>Iguape, PE Jacupiranga<8E>and<8E>Cananeia<8E>. Found inland in suitable habitat as far as the Pantanal in the northwest ^56,^114 and Paraguay.
