26 cm. A large woodcreeper with a long, dark horn colored bill. Brown above. Throat beige. Lighter brown below with large guttate beige streaks. Belly brown and unstriped. Wings and long tail reddish-brown. A sequence of whistles that become louder and again softer raising in pitch and duration, even becoming two-syllabic and lasting for minutes. Also many other sound combinations such as "tiu tiu ti ti ti" etc. In alarm a descending whistle "ziiu". See also ^36, ^37 and ^38 for calls from Trinidad, Venezuela and Bolivia . In Amazonia scales trees in humid primary and secondary forest and forest edge, quite vocal, forages at middle and high levels. In SW Peru this species spends 63 of its time foraging in dead-leaf substrates ^116 . Mature primary and secondary lowland rain forest. Up to 1100 meters ^44 .
