The account

Description

26 cm. A large woodcreeper with a long, dark horn colored bill. Brown above. Throat beige. Lighter brown below with large guttate beige streaks. Belly brown and unstriped. Wings and long tail reddish-brown.

Where it was recorded

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

A sequence of whistles that become louder and again softer raising in pitch and duration, even becoming two-syllabic and lasting for minutes. Also many other sound combinations such as 'tiu tiu ti ti ti' etc. In alarm a descending whistle 'ziiu'. (See also ³⁶, ³⁷ and ³⁸ for calls from Trinidad, Venezuela and Bolivia).

Behavior

In Amazonia scales trees in humid primary and secondary forest and forest edge, quite vocal, forages at middle and high levels. In SW Peru this species spends 63 % of its time foraging in dead-leaf substrates (¹¹⁶).

Habitat and status

Mature primary and secondary lowland rain forest. Up to 1100 meters (⁴⁴).

Said to occur in eastern Brazil south to Rio de Janeiro but not well known in our area. To be looked for in Rio de Janeiro. (³⁰, ⁴⁰, ⁴⁴)
